What is a Folk High School?

Folk high schools are subsidized by the Norwegian state, even for foreign students, but you have to pay for room, food, and study trips. Everything is included in the price you pay for a year at a folk high school, apart from your trip to and from the school, and your personal belongings and equipment.

Who Can Apply?

Folk high schools are open to anyone over 18 years old. If you’re not a citizen of the EU/EEU or Great Britain you’ll need to apply for a study permit before you come to Norway.

You don’t need to speak Norwegian before coming. Just bring an open mind and a love for adventure!

How to Apply?

Applying is easy! Find the school you want to apply to on this website and send in your application. You’ll usually hear from the school within a few weeks. If the school accepts your application, they will also tell you about the practical side of moving to Norway.

The school year starts in August and lasts for 9 to 10 months, so it’s perfect if you want to take a gap year or just do something completely different.
